Christian Education Corner (December 2011)It’s All About Babies Did you ever ask yourself why God chose to come to earth as a baby? A very practical possibility is offered by one of our young people. “Well, he couldn’t very well just show up on earth as an adult.” But maybe there is more to it. ince mid-November, both the Wednesday Pray and Play and Sunday School youth classes have been talking about babies in preparation for our annual Christmas pageant. The kids have developed quite a colorful list of things about babies. We’ve discussed the Old Testament stories of Isaac, Ishmael, Moses, and Samuel. We referenced sibling issues among Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers. We peeked in on Gabriel’s activities with Elizabeth and Mary. Of course, it’s all about the Baby. But going back to the colorful list… did Bible babies do all those things? Did Jesus really need to have his diapers changed? As you enter Advent, be sure to mark your calendar for this special pageant day: What Is It About a Baby? featuring both youth and adults in singing, speaking, instrumental music and technology. Please note the schedule changes for the month. There is no Pray and Play on December 21st and 28th. Children will stay in the worship service on December 18th, 25th, and January 1st, and there is no second hour program those dates. Nursery care is available on those dates as needed. Our Sunday Morning Adult class will continue The Lucado Life Lessons series which brings the New Testament to life. “Roman’s – God’s Big Picture” is about choices, personally and within our church. On Wednesday evenings we will be finishing up the Marcus J. Borg session of “Embracing an Adult Faith”, which leads us to a richer understanding of issues in contemporary Christian practice and theology. We will continue our adult study with “Searching for Spirituality” authored by Joan Chittister, a Benedictine nun, teacher sociologist and author. Joan says “spirituality is concerned with how to live a full life…Real spirituality is life illuminated by a compelling search for wholeness.” Take a quiet moment this Christmas to imagine that first night… to ponder what it would be like to count the fingers and toes of the baby Jesus, to hold him in your arms. And give thanks for the place where the story ends… and begins anew. Merry Christmas, Everyone. In Christ’s love, Zoë   |
